So why Latvia?

”...and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” — Acts 1:8

Have you ever wondered, “What are the ends of the earth?”

Graystone Church is partnering with The Hope Epidemic and planning a trip to Latvia from May 17-27, 2014.

We’ll be going to the city of Karosta in western Latvia. Karosta (meaning War Port) is a suburb of Liepaja, Latvia and is situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The city of Karosta was the site of a former Soviet military base housing the Soviet Baltic fleet. In the early 1990’s when Latvia gained its independence, the Russian military pulled out the country and Karosta instantly lost 25,000 citizens leaving the city virtually uninhabited. While in Karosta, we will work closely with Hope for Children (www.hope.lv) and radiate Christ’s love as we minister to and love on the “at risk” children and teenagers of Karosta who visit the Children’s and Teen Center.

If you’re interested in going with us to Latvia, please fill out this application. If you have questions about the trip, keep reading, or email us at missions@graystonechurch.com for more details.

What we will be doing in Latvia?
This is going to be an amazing but exhausting trip! If you love to work with children then this trip will be for you! While in Karosta, the team will be working with a local Children’s Center and a local Teen Center operated by Hope for Children (www.hope.lv). Currently the centers are overrun with more children than they are able to accommodate. These facilities open their doors to “at risk” children and youth and provide them hope for their future. Most of these children come from single parent homes and rely on the centers to provide what could be the only meal and hot shower they receive each day. During this trip the team will also be visiting a local orphanage in Liepaja and will visit local families in need of physical, emotional and spiritual support as our time permits.

Do I need a passport?
Yes, a passport is required for all travel outside the U.S. If you don't have one, please apply for it ASAP.

Do I need shots?
No vaccines are required, but the CDC does recommend a couple of vaccinations when traveling to Latvia - http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/latvia.

Who can go?

You must be 16 years of age. If you have a willingness to go share your faith and encourage the children of Latvia we want you to go.

Is it safe?
Yes. We are flying reputable airlines and staying in accommodations with a trusted partner.

Do I have to speak Latvian or Russian?
No! We will be accompanied on most occasions with a translator and most of our acquaintances speak a decent amount of English.

What if I've never been on a mission trip?
There is no better time than the present! Whether it's your first or tenth time, this is a trip for everyone.

Will I have to speak in front of crowds?
Although the opportunity may present itself, no one will be forced to share.

If your question about this trip was not answered, please email us at missions@graystonechurch.com.
